Design of survivable WDM network based on pre-configured protection cycle

    Get PDF
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is an important technique which allows the trans- port of large quantities of data over optical networks. All optical WDM-based networks have been used to improve overall communication capacity and provide an excellent choice for the design of backbone networks. However, due to the high traffic load that each link can carry in a WDM network, survivability against failures becomes very important. Survivability in this context is the ability of the network to maintain continuity of service against failures, since a failure can lead to huge data losses. In recent years, many survivability mechanisms have been studied and their performance assessed through capacity efficiency, restoration time and restorability. Survivability mechanisms for ring and mesh topologies have received particular attention

Information Reliability on the Social Web - Models and Applications in Intelligent User Interfaces

    Get PDF
The Social Web is undergoing continued evolution, changing the paradigm of information production, processing and sharing. Information sources have shifted from institutions to individual users, vastly increasing the amount of information available online. To overcome the information overload problem, modern filtering algorithms have enabled people to find relevant information in efficient ways. However, noisy, false and otherwise useless information remains a problem. We believe that the concept of information reliability needs to be considered along with information relevance to adapt filtering algorithms to today's Social Web. This approach helps to improve information search and discovery and can also improve user experience by communicating aspects of information reliability. This thesis first shows the results of a cross-disciplinary study into perceived reliability by reporting on a novel user experiment. This is followed by a discussion of modeling, validating, and communicating information reliability, including its various definitions across disciplines. A selection of important reliability attributes such as source credibility, competence, influence and timeliness are examined through different case studies. Results show that perceived reliability of information can vary greatly across contexts. Finally, recent studies on visual analytics, including algorithm explanations and interactive interfaces are discussed with respect to their impact on the perception of information reliability in a range of application domains

Dynamic p-cycles selection in optical WDM Mesh networks

    Get PDF
P-cycles have been recognized as a useful protection scheme in WDM mesh networks. This is a type of shared link protection that not only retains the mesh-like capacity efficiency, but also achieves the ring-like protection switching speed. However, finding the optimal set of p-cycles for protecting traffic demands is not a simple task and is an NP-hard problem. A general approach is to determine a set of candidate p-cycles and then determine optimal or near-optimal solutions by using integer linear programming (ILP) models or heuristics. In a dense mesh network, however, the number of candidate cycles is huge, and increases exponentially if the node number is increased. Thus, searching for a suitable set of efficient candidate cycles is crucial and imperative to balancing the computational time and the optimality of solutions. In this paper, we propose a dynamic P-cycles selection (DPS) algorithm that improves the efficiency of enumerating candidate p-cycles. The dynamic approach for cycle selection is based on the network state. In the DPS algorithm, all cycles are found and stored, then an efficient and sufficient set of p-cycles is extracted to achieve 100% working protection, minimize the spare capacity, and reduce time complexity

A Novel Experimental Approach for Curing Polymer Analysis

Thesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2019In aerospace industry, understanding the development of stress within the composite part is a crucial aspect in producing high-quality composite parts. One such issue in composite manufacturing is the volume change of the polymer matrix material, that occurs as the epoxy cures and shrinks in volume. Over the years, several experimental procedures have been introduced to characterize various sources of this shrinkage. However, most of these methods are unable to provide an analysis of the epoxy throughout its cure cycle. In this paper, a novel experimental device is introduced to analyze the entire cure cycle of the matrix material of a typical composite. Unlike other previously proposed methods for curing polymer analysis, this apparatus aims to analyze the epoxy through rigorous stress calculation. Furthermore, it also aims to provide addition insights that may showcase relations between various cure characteristics that were previously unknown

Poster: Real Time Hand Pose Recognition with Depth Sensors for Mixed Reality Interfaces

    No full text
We present a method for predicting articulated hand poses in realtime with a single depth camera, such as the Kinect or Xtion Pro, for the purpose of interaction in a Mixed Reality environment and for studying the effects of realistic and non-realistic articulated hand models in a Mixed Reality simulator. We demonstrate that employing a randomized decision forest for hand recognition benefits realtime applications without the typical tracking pitfalls such as reinitialization. This object recognition approach to predict hand poses results in relatively low computation, high prediction accuracy and sets the groundwork needed to utilize articulated hand movements for 3D tasks in Mixed Reality workspaces
